Beyond the Wood Pile: 3 DIY Sustainable Projects
Summer is almost over and you are probably scratching your head about what to do with your leftover kiln dried firewood. It is too small of a pile to haul into the house, yet it is just the right amount of wood to put to good use.
As we mentioned on our Facebook page yesterday, there are over 50 DIY projects to choose from. Today’s blog post is going to highlight 3 that I feel will work our type of wood kiln dried and white birch firewood.
Here they are:
Little Stools
If you have children or have hard to reach places at your home or office, you know stools are of great help and you can never have enough of them.
Basically all you need are 4 things: wood, a measuring tape, table saw and wood screws.
Stools have 4 legs, 2 side boards where the screws go in and 4 boards across the top. Your pieces don’t have to be super flat (except the side boards) and you can easily make 3 or 4 in one afternoon.
Photo Blocks
You can print off a series of photos from a special occasion – a wedding, family reunion or graduation – and display these blocks across your fireplace mantle. Or with the holidays coming up, you can give them away as presents – especially for those individuals that are hard to buy for.
What you will need:
- A saw to make your blocks as square as possible.
- Modge Podge
- Glaze
- Acrylic Paint
- Glue
- Paint Brush
- Photo Paper
Once you have printed your photos, glue the pic on the block. Once securely adhered, paint the edges of the block and photo. Once dry, coat your photos with Modge Podge. Once dry, apply the glaze on top of the photo with your brush. Let dry and put these works of art on your fireplace for display!
Wood Pallet Christmas Trees
You can do many things with these trees including using them for decorations, card holders and outdoor decor.
Here is what you need:
- Scrap kiln dried firewood
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Mitre saw
- Brad Nailer
- Wire and hooks if you are making a card holder
- Paint
