4 Fantastic Fire Safety Tips When Using a Fireplace
There are fireplaces in many homes and using them can be a fun, relaxing experience all year round. Premier Firewood Company™ has a few tips, however, to help to ensure your safety and the safety of your family.
First of all, make sure that you have a clear space for your fire to burn. This involves opening your damper before lighting and keeping it open until the fire is completely extinguished. Give the fire some space around it by not keeping any large pieces of furniture or decoration close to the fireplace. Also, do not hang anything from the mantle, like decorations or lights, so as to avoid them catching on fire. There is debate over whether it is harmful to hang a TV over the fireplace. Please read further to view some of the pros and cons of this debate.
Second, be sure to open all the windows in the room during this time of year. In order to burn efficiently, fires require about five times as much oxygen as a normal room usually has, so opening up the windows is important. Additionally, burn only a few logs at a time and stack them towards the back of the fireplace.
Third, use the metal mesh screen while the fire is burning so as to keep the lit embers in the fireplace. There should also be a mesh screen at the top of your chimney, and any branches hanging around the roof area should be cleared so they don’t begin an outside fire.
Most importantly, be sure to minimize fireplace creosote and soot buildup within your chimney. The best way to do this is to use kiln dried firewood for a clean burn.
With a fire extinguisher nearby and use of all these tips, you are ready to enjoy your wood burning fireplace today!
