How to Order the Right Amount of Firewood
Whether you like the ambiance of a crackling fire or supplement your home heat with cheerful flames during cold months, you’ll need wood to fuel your fireplace come winter. Precut wood appropriate for fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and outdoor fire pits saves you the hassle of scavenging appropriate fuel yourself, and Premier Firewood adds to the convenience by delivering and stacking it for you. But to get your money’s worth and avoid waste and rot, it’s important to know just how much firewood to buy.
Full Cord vs Face Cord
Firewood is typically sold by the cord, and you might default to a full cord when ordering it. That’s a lot of wood, though. Traditional cords are stacks that measure 8 feet wide by 4 feet high, but they also measure 4 feet deep. That means when you view the stack from the widest angle, there’s usually another layer or more of wood behind it.
Face cords measure 8 feet wide by 4 feet high, but they are only 16-18 inches deep — typically, they are as deep as the average length of a single log. With a face cord, you can typically see how much wood you get by viewing the stack from the widest side.
Why Not Buy a Full Cord?
A cord is often too much firewood to burn during a season for individuals who burn for aesthetic value or even just supplemental heat in a home fireplace — or for recreational use in an outdoor fire pit. And when you don’t use all your firewood in a season, it can end up rotting and being wasted. Face cords are sold to provide an option for consumers who need smaller amounts of wood.
Premier Firewood makes it even easier to get the right amount of wood for your use: You can purchase a full-size face cord or a half-size face cord, which is a stack of wood that measures 4 feet wide by 4 feet high by 16 inches deep. You can also choose to purchase your cord with or without a rack to store it on.

Tips for Storing Firewood Safely and Securely
No matter how much firewood you need or buy, storing it the right way extends its life and helps you get the most value out of your purchase. Here are some tips for properly storing your firewood.
– Keep it off the ground to reduce rot and infestation from bugs and bacteria — store firewood on a metal rack or on surfaces like concrete.
– When possible, store firewood in an outdoor shed or garage to keep it away from elements like rain and snow.
– Cover firewood stacks with a tarp if you leave them outdoors to minimize exposure and rot and to ensure your wood is dry when it’s time to use it.
– Always stack firewood in an organized manner that allows some space on all sides of the stack for air to circulate; this prevents moisture build-up and faster rotting.
